It is rare to work with an individual who can bring to the table expertise, conviction and passionate intensity. The embodiment of all three, Allan McWhirter, has acted as the Estates and Construction Adviser for St Columba's School for more than three years and in that time has had a transformational impact on the organisation's approach to its buildings and facilities more generally. From compliance matters to risk assessments and major capital development projects - the largest of which (The Girdwood Building opened in Autumn 2016) brought the total capital budget to £7.5 million - he has used the wealth of experience gained from over three decades working in the industry to see off the numerous challenges we have faced not least the very tight time pressure on the completion of the refurbishment of the Science building over the summer term and holiday of 2015 which had to be open and functioning on the first day of the new session.
Most crucially, though, he has done it all with a searing eye for detail, a disarming ability to get alongside people from all walks, an unstinting approach to giving of his time and a shrewd awareness of where real value for money lies.
Allan (AGM) came on board as Project Manager to the Duchal Nursery School new build project at its very inception and continued to provide his support throughout, even after completion. He brought his expertise, practicality and attention to detail to our project which was second to none and provided the vital ingredients needed when creating a purpose built nursery school experience for young children. Allan has assisted me on two projects. The first a shop which had to be stripped back to the bare structure and completely refurbished. The second was a mews property which was in use as an office and which was again stripped back to a bare shell and then restored to residential use. Allan acted as my "policeman on the beat", making sure that contractors and other professionals did what they were supposed to , when they were supposed to do it and to the highest standard. Allan did a first class job, a methodical approach combined with a pleasant but firm manner made things run smoothly. In my view Allan saved rather than cost me money by ensuring that extra charges did not sneak through and what had been paid for was done. On top of that was the improved quality. At the end of the second project the architects found 6 items for snagging, Allan found 43. I will use Allan again on my next project.
AGM Property and Project Management has provided a range of commercial and project management advice and services for Neat Living, in connection with project appraisal and project management. Besides bringing practical information, Allan always tries to bring that little bit more - whether it be in terms of ideas and suggestions, etc., which can really make all the difference. Allan at AGM is a massive help to me with my residential rental portfolio. Assisting with everything from advice on initial property selection/acquisition, through upgrade planning and the delivery by contractors who he helps to vet/manage, he's been invaluable in helping to expand the group.
